Following the recent meeting of the Grand Prix Commission, it has been decided to make the Moto2 and Moto3 qualifying similar to that of MotoGP.
At the moment the smaller classes have one long qualifying period. It was noted that in some cases the best lap times were made early in the session making the remainder of the time of little use and limited entertainment for the fans.
There has also been a continued number of riders riding slowly on the racing line looking for a tow.
With a change to a Q1 and Q2 similar to MotoGP, it is hoped to avoid both these issues and make the smaller class qualifying more exciting.
From the 2019 season, the riders will have three free practice sessions. The fastest 14 riders will automatically qualify for Q2. The rest will enter Q1 with the fastest four moving through to Q2. Those coming through from Q2 will be allowed an extra rear tyre for qualifying.
Under the new format, the free practice sessions for Moto2 and Moto3 will be of forty minute duration and the qualifying sessions 15 minutes each.
