The factory Suzuki rider may have been fortunate to take the win in Austin but he showed great character in Jerez to come through from ninth on the grid and finish second.
He made a superb start and was fighting in the top six by the end of the first lap. Sandwiched in between the Ducati of Dovizioso and Petrucci, he got the better of the number 4 machine on lap 6 moving into fifth place.
Six laps later and he had picked off Maverick Viñales before going on to pass Franco Morbidelli just four laps later. Rins then held second place for the remaining 11 laps of the race.
Coupled with the win in Austin Rins is now just one point shy of championship leader Marc Marquez.
“It’s incredible to get a win and then a 2nd place. I feel very happy; this race was really difficult and starting on the third row made it harder. I gave 100% and I knew that my race pace could be close to Marc’s, so I planned to try and get a good start and go towards the front. The Spanish fans were amazing today, I could see Peluqui corner full of fans and it gives me a real boost every lap. I want to keep up this consistency and I hope for another good finish in Le Mans.”
