British Motostar Championship

BSB Moto3 British Motostar Championship

The official name is the Hel Performance British Motostar Championship and it is a support series of the British Superbike Championship. The riders compete in two distinct categories within the series. There is the full Moto3 GP machine championship and then there is the Moto3 standard class category.

In most cases, the two classes race at the same time but score points in their own specific championship class. The BSB Moto3 Motostar GP machines are similar to those you see in the World Moto3 Championship. The standard series runs with Honda NSF250R bikes. In the standard class, the engines cannot be altered but the teams can change brakes and suspension.

There are currently 18 races at 9 different events. The series runs as a support series of the British Superbike Championship so has a similar calendar. It arguably has some of the closest and most exciting racing too.

You can find out more about the British Motostar Championship standard class series here where we interviewed Neil Spalding.

The BSB Moto3 Motostar Championship can be followed in a number of ways. You can watch it on British Eurosport live or highlights on ITV4. Alternatively, you can also watch highlights on the BSB YouTube channel and finally, you can read about it and follow it on our website. You can subscribe to Motostar articles from this website too. Prior to 2016 two-stroke 125cc machines also competed, but with the introduction of the BSB Moto3 Motostar standard class, and the reduced numbers of 125cc competing, the organisers withdrew 125cc bikes from the championship.

BSB Moto3 British Motostar Championship former winners

This support class has seen a number of riders develop their careers. The forerunner to the Motostar Championship consisted solely of 125cc bikes. Back in 2001, Leon Camier took the title when he beat the future double MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner by three points. He is now in World Superbikes with the Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team. Kyle Ryde won the 125cc class in 2011 who has ridden at World Supersport level and in 2018 competed in several British Superbike rounds and in the Moto2 class of BSB.  The Dutch rider Scott Deroue won the BSB Moto3 Motostar title in 2015 and went on to compete in the World Supersport 300 championship where he finished third in 2018. 2015 was also the last year that the 125cc bikes entered the series. That year Josh Owens won the title and in 2018 he won the British GP2 (a Moto2 class) title, a new support series of British Superbikes.

In 2016 the BSB Moto3 British Motostar Champion was Charlie Nesbitt. In the inaugural year of the BSB Moto3 Motostar standard class Dan Jones took the title. Both won their classes in emphatic style and went on to the CEV Repsol Moto3 Junior World Championship series in 2017. Nesbitt also rode in the series for part of 2018. Dan Jones completed his second year in the Red Bull Rookies Cup in 2018 and is now back in the British Motostar paddock but looking to take the GP class title.

Tom Booth-Amos won the GP title in 2017 and rode for the British Talent Team in the FIM CEV Repsol Moto3 Junior World Championship in 2018. He is now racing for the CIP – Green Power team in the 2019 Moto3 World Championship. The winner of the standard class, Max Cook, competed in the Red Bull Rookies in 2018 and was invited back for 2019. He also challenged for the title in the British Talent Cup in 2018. The championship is clearly proving a stepping stone in the careers of young motorcycle racers.
