Edgar Pons (Baiko Racing) snatched pole position away from Yari Montella (Team Ciatti-Speed Up) in Q2. The Spanish rider registered a lap time of 1:44.768 finishing three-thousandths of one second ahead of the Italian.

A 1:44.771 in Q1 had the Italian Yari Montella leading the Moto2 field. However, he was just 0.028 seconds ahead of 2016 Championship winner Edgar Pons. Niki Tuuli (Team Stylobike) back from a huge crash last time out in Valencia was a mere 0.051 second further back with the third fastest time.

Hector Garzo (CNS Motorsport) was fourth quickest whilst Tommaso Marcon (Team Ciatti-Speed Up) completed the top five. Alessandro Zaccone (Promoracing), who is currently third in the championship, finished sixth in Q1.

In the second session Edgar Pons managed to improve on his Q1 time taking with it pole position that looked like it might have been Montella’s. Tuuli and Garzo couldn’t improve on their Q1 times but stayed third and fourth. Marcon slipped to sixth by the end of the day after a 1:45.724 allowed Zaccone to finish 0.054 seconds ahead of his fellow Italian.
